'Sheep Station' Natural Fiber Sculpture
This abundant fiber sculpture is a handmade collection of natural materials and found objects.
I see as much beauty in a wad of rusted wire at the side of the road as in a piece of fine silver. I used three spirals of twisted galvanized wire to create an airy frame for this giant tassel of chains made from old ropes, wool yarn and cotton string.
Tucked inside are more wool tassels and tangles of linen string that are reminiscent of seaweed cast on the beach after a storm.
Simple kites my parents made were attached to cotton string and wound around sticks. These things were inspiration for my tassel piece ... sun bleached driftwood wound with kite string. I created giant flowers from old handmade crocheted pieces and wound them around the driftwood roots.
Foraging to discover oddball objects that have a patina of age like rusty metal, weathered wood, bits of faded ribbon and cast off old lamp parts is a constant inspiration. I used these natural gathering tendencies to collect objects and textures to create this fiber sculpture.
Sculpture aprox. 8' L x 2.5' W, includes wire.
